Why do we have birthmarks? Do you have a birthmark? What causes birthmarks? Are birthmarks dangerous? ‘Strawberry’ birthmarks grow rapidly when babies are just a few weeks old. Strawberry shaped birthmarks called infantile hemangiomas grow rapidly in infants much earlier than previously thought, researchers have discovered. What are Birthmarks? The term ‘birthmark’ can refer to all sorts of spots in the human body.

A birthmark is a benign irregularity on the skin which is present at birth or appears shortly after birth, usually in the first month. Birthmarks can occur anywhere on the skin. Birthmarks are caused by overgrowth of blood vessels, melanocytes, smooth muscle, fat, fibroblasts, or keratinocytes.

Dermatologists divide birthmarks into two types. Pigmented birthmarks caused by excess skin pigment cells include moles, café au lait spots, and Mongolian spots. Vascular birthmarks (also called red birthmarks) are caused by increased blood vessels and include macular stains (salmon patches), hemangiomas, and Port-wine stains. A little over 1 in 10 babies have a vascular birthmark present by age 1. Several birthmark types are part of the group of skin lesions known as nevi or naevi, which means “birthmarks” in Latin.

The exact cause of most birthmarks is unknown, but vascular birthmarks are not hereditary. Vascular birthmarks are thought to occur as a result of a localized imbalance in factors controlling the development and migration of skin cells.

Why Do We Blink Our Eyes?

Above: Why Do We Blink Our Eyes?

Have you ever wondered the real reasons why we blink our eyes? Trace decided to explain and talk to us about a few of the different reasons why we close our eyes so many times each day. Did you know that babies blink their eyes less than adults? In fact, parents of babies and newborn children sometimes notice an unusual phenomenon: normal babies rarely close their eyes, except of course when they are sleeping.

Why do we blink our eyes so frequently? We all blink a lot. In fact, the average person blinks some 15-20 times per minute, which is so frequently that our eyes are closed for roughly 10% of our waking hours overall. But why do we blink our eyes? We have to blink our eyes to cleanse and moisten the eyes, but there is another very important reason why we blink our eyes so many times each minute.

Does Life Experience Change Your Cell Biology And Genetic Structure? Are Humans Software That Can Be Programmed?

Gene Expression

“A cell is a machine for turning life experiences into biology.”

Have you ever wondered if your life experiences can change your cell biology? Are humans truly powerful beings with the capacity to change our very own genetic structure based on our daily activities and things that we experience throughout our lives?

Gene expression is the process by which information from a gene is used in the synthesis of a functional gene product. These products are often proteins, but in non-protein coding genes such as transfer RNA (tRNA) or small nuclear RNA (snRNA) genes, the product is a functional RNA. The process of gene expression is used by all known life—eukaryotes (including multicellular organisms), prokaryotes (bacteria and archaea), and utilized by viruses, to generate the macromolecular machinery for life.

What Is Computer Science? Is Computer Science The Same As Computer Programming? What Is The Difference Between Computer Science And Computer Programming?

Contrary to what you may think, these two subjects are about as different as Latin is to linear algebra.

What Is Computer Science?

It’s math. As a computer science major myself, I can tell you first hand that computer science involves writing very little code — especially at the higher levels. If I had to arbitrarily assign a percentage to “math v. programming”, I would say that computer science is at least 80% math and at most 20% programming. Continue reading
