You know their names. You recognize their faces on the world’s most prestigious fashion magazines. You know they make millions, and we mean millions. But did you know that these supermodels are also becoming business giants in the fashion industry? Business you said? We thought this was a fashion blog about the modeling industry and our favorite models and supermodels. Actually, you are correct, but maybe not in the way that you thought you were prior to reading this article.

Gisele Bundchen is known throughout the world. She is expected to perhaps become the world’s first self made billionaire model. Gisele Bundchen is still the highest paid model in the world, having earned approximately $45 million last year. While her record $5 million a year Victoria’s Secret contract has ended, she still earns serious money by licensing her image to Brazilian shoe company Grendene. Her sandal line, Ipanema by Gisele, accounts for about 20% of the company’s $95 million in annual sales. Annual royalty that gets sent in the form of checks to the beautiful wife of superstar quarterback Tom Brady: about $8 million per year just from that income source alone.

Pity the poor supermodel. In The 1990’s supermodels earned $50,000 a day on the runways of New York, London, Paris or Milan. Today, all but the cream of the crop are likely to walk away with little more than a taxi fare and a few pairs of the designer’s high heels. As for high powered cosmetics contracts, long the province of supermodels like Claudia Schiffer and Cindy Crawford, those are now going to Hollywood stars like Scarlett Johansson and Eva Longoria, both with L’Oréal.

Fortunately, beautiful faces never go out of style. A popular model with a few contracts under her belt can slap her name on fragrances, clothes, shoes, and skincare lines. “Brands are still looking for that beautiful face or body,” says Ryan Schinman, chief executive of Platinum Rye, which represents corporations that partner with celebrities. “Older models with household names are making more than they ever did as supermodels in the 1980’s or 1990’s. They are at the height of their earning potential.” Heidi Klum, the world’s 2nd most highly paid model having earned approximately $20 million last year is known throughout the world thanks to having been an Angel with Victoria’s Secret and now the famous host of Project Runway which is seen by millions of viewers worldwide. As she approaches her 40’s, one can only imagine that this is just the beginning of her fashion modeling empire.

But no supermodel can quite compete with Sports Illustrated favorite Kathy Ireland, whose branding strategy inspired the likes of Cindy Crawford and Heidi Klum. Kathy Ireland, who puts her name on everything from sofas and window blinds to jewelry and even entire homes has taken branding to the billion dollar universe! In 2007, her company, Kathy Ireland Worldwide, in which the green-eyed beauty holds a majority stake, generated $1.5 billion in retail sales. Kathy Ireland takes home at least $15 million of that dollar amount. Everyone knows it pays to be pretty and beautiful. It is also good to know that it pays even more to be really smart. Thus, while many in the fashion industry have claimed that the “Age Of The Supermodel” is long gone, many could argue that this is just the beginning!
